Opera (taalkundig ontstaan uit het meervoud van
opus) is een vorm van muziektheater, waarbij een overwegend gezongen toneelstuk, in dichtmaten met orkestbegeleiding, wordt uitgebeeld. Opera is onderdeel van de westerse klassieke muziekcultuur. Er zijn ook niet-westerse vormen van muziektheater die vaak opera genoemd worden, met een onderscheidend
bijvoeglijk naamwoord ervoor, bijvoorbeeld de
Chinese opera. De vierhonderdjarige geschiedenis van de opera zoals we die heden ten dage kennen, vindt haar oorsprong in
Florence. Eind 16e eeuw was hier een groep intellectuelen voornemens het klassieke drama zoals het in Oudheid bestond, nieuw leven in te blazen. Hun grote voorbeeld hierbij was
Aristoteles, die in de 4e eeuw voor Christus over toneel en muziek had geschreven, alsof deze twee zaken dezelfde waren. Volgens Aristoteles was drama de imitatie van het leven, dat verlevendigd werd met zowel versiering als melodie. Op basis daarvan veronderstelden de Florentijnen dat het klassieke drama volledig gezongen moest zijn geweest. De eerste componist die een poging deed dit in de praktijk om te zetten, was
Jacopo Peri (1561-1633), die hiervoor het
Grieks mythologische drama Dafne aanwendde. Zijn werk
Euridice (1600) dat daaruit voortkwam, werd daarmee de eerste opera. Belangrijke latere operacomponisten waren onder andere
