orthodoxy

Orthodoxy (from Greek ὀρθοδοξία, orthodoxia – "correct belief", "right opinion") is adherence to correct or accepted norms, more specifically to creeds, especially in religion. In the Christian sense the term means "conforming to the Christian faith as represented in the creeds of the early Church". The first seven Ecumenical Councils were held over the period between the years 325 and 787 with the aim of formalizing accepted doctrines.

Orthodoxie ( orthós ‚richtig‘, ‚geradlinig‘ und dóxa ‚Meinung‘, ‚Glaube‘, also „Rechtgläubigkeit“) bezeichnet allgemein eine Interpretation einer Lehre, die sich stark an die ursprüngliche Interpretation hält. Anhänger einer Orthodoxie sehen darin eine notwendige Selbstbehauptung des Denkens gegen Beliebigkeit und Willkür; die jeweiligen Kritiker wenden ein, dass eine orthodoxe Interpretation sich flexiblen Weiterentwicklungen und Anpassungen an veränderte religiöse, politische und kulturelle Verhältnisse verweigert.

Met orthodox christendom kan het volgende worden bedoeld:

• een bepaalde strengheid of nauwgezette naleving van iets: orthodoxie
• de Kerk van het Oosten oftewel de Oosters-orthodoxe Kerk
• protestantse groeperingen die vasthouden aan de traditionele christelijke dogma's, waaronder het gezag van de bijbel: Orthodox-protestantisme

Het woord orthodoxie (van het Grieks: ὀρθός, orthos, recht en δόξα, doxa, mening, glorie) betekent letterlijk 'juiste aanbidding' of 'juiste leer'. Synoniem: rechtzinnig.
