A parent is a caretaker of the offspring in their own species. In humans, a parent is of a child (where "child" refers to offspring, not necessarily age). A biological parent consists of a person whose gamete resulted in a child, a male through the sperm, and a female through the ovum. Parents are first-degree relatives and have 50% genetic meet. A female can also become a parent through surrogacy. Some parents may be adoptive parents, who nurture and raise an offspring, but are not actually biologically related to the child. Orphans without adoptive parents can be raised by their grandparents or other family members.

Verwandtschaftsbeziehung bezeichnet ein Verhältnis zwischen Personen, dem eine biologische Abstammung voneinander oder von derselben dritten Person zugrunde liegt; neben dieser Blutsverwandtschaft gibt es die rechtliche Verwandtschaft durch Feststellung der Elternschaft für ein nicht leibliches Kind (Adoption, Vaterschafts­anerkennung, Geburt nach Eizellspende). Mit den Verwandten von Ehepartnern oder eingetragenen Lebenspartnern besteht in den meisten Ländern keine rechtliche Verwandtschaft, sondern eine Schwägerschaft, umgangssprachlich indirekte Verwandtschaft genannt. Neben leiblichen und rechtlichen Beziehungen gibt es auch Formen der sozialen Verwandtschaft.

Le terme parent, relatif à la famille, désigne celle et celui qui élève et protège l'enfant, peu importe son sexe. Également, le membre d'une même famille peut aussi s'appeler parent.

Rodzice – nazwa jednej z podstawowych relacji w rodzinie. W ogólnym znaczeniu, są to osoby, od których dziecko pochodzi bezpośrednio – ojciec i matka danego dziecka lub dzieci, czyli rodzeństwa. Rodzic to zarówno ojciec jak matka, ale w języku staropolskim oznaczało tylko ojca. Fakt posiadania dziecka przez kobietę i bycia matką to macierzyństwo, a fakt posiadania dziecka przez mężczyznę i bycia ojcem to ojcostwo. Bycie rodzicem to rodzicielstwo. Potocznie, ojciec to także tata (lub tatuś), a matka – mama (lub mamusia).
