Perception (from the Latin perceptio, percipio) is the organization, identification, and interpretation of sensory information in order to represent and understand the environment. All perception involves signals in the nervous system, which in turn result from physical or chemical stimulation of the sense organs. For example, vision involves light striking the retina of the eye, smell is mediated by odor molecules, and hearing involves pressure waves. Perception is not the passive receipt of these signals, but is shaped by learning, memory, expectation, and attention.

Wahrnehmung (auch Perzeption) ist der Prozess und das Ergebnis der Informationsgewinnung und -verarbeitung von Reizen aus der Umwelt und dem Körperinnern eines Lebewesens. Dies geschieht durch unbewusstes und beim Menschen manchmal bewusstes Filtern und Zusammenführen von Teil-Informationen zu subjektiv sinn­vollen Gesamteindrücken. Diese werden auch Perzepte genannt und laufend mit gespeicherten Vorstellungen (Konstrukten und Schemata) abgeglichen.

La perception est une faculté biophysique ou le phénomène physio-psychologique et culturel qui relie l'action du vivant aux mondes et à l'environnement par l'intermédiaire des sens physiologiques et des idéologies individuelles. Chez l'espèce humaine, la perception est aussi liée aux mécanismes de cognition par l'abstraction inhérent à l'idée et aux notions apprises dans la pensée.
