In chemistry, pH is a numeric scale used to specify the acidity or basicity(alkalinity) of an aqueous solution. It is roughly the negative of the logarithm to base 10 of the concentration, measured in units of moles  per liter, of hydrogen ions or H+. More precisely it is the negative of the logarithm to base 10 of the activity of the  hydrogen ion. Solutions with a pH less than 7 are acidic and solutions with a pH greater than 7 are basic. Pure water is neutral, being neither an acid nor a base. Contrary to popular belief, the pH value can be less than 0 or greater than 14 for very strong acids and bases respectively.

Der pH-Wert ist ein Maß für den sauren oder basischen Charakter einer wässrigen Lösung. Er ist der negative dekadische Logarithmus (= Zehnerlogarithmus) der Wasserstoffionen-Aktivität und eine dimensionslose Zahl.

De pH is een maat voor de zuurgraad (ook wel zuurtegraad) van een waterige oplossing. De pH van een neutrale waterige oplossing ligt bij kamertemperatuur rond de 7. Zure oplossingen hebben een pH lager dan 7, basische oplossingen hebben een pH hoger dan 7.

Le potentiel hydrogène (ou pH) est une mesure de l'activité chimique des (appelés aussi couramment protons) en solution. Notamment, en solution aqueuse, ces ions sont présents sous la forme de l'ion oxonium (également, et improprement, appelé ion hydronium).
