phase change
Phase change
Phase change may refer to:
phase change
Noun
1. a change from one state (solid or liquid or gas) to another without a change in chemical composition
(synonym) phase transition, state change, physical change
(hypernym) natural process, natural action, action, activity
(hyponym) freeze, freezing
Phase change
A change in the way atoms, molecules or particles aggregate in a substance. The different aggregations are known as phases; gas, liquid, solid. For instance, when water exists as a vapour in clouds, changes in temperature and pressure can cause it to change its phase. The result is that the water molecules aggregate into a liquid and the water falls as rain. A further cooling can produce solid ice.
phase change (phase transition)
A change in the state of a sample of matter; for example, solid to liquid or liquid to gas. Phase changes are considered physical rather than chemical changes.
