A phosphate (PO₄^3-) is an inorganic chemical and a salt of phosphoric acid. In organic chemistry, a phosphate, or organophosphate, is an ester of phosphoric acid. Of the various phosphoric acids and phosphates, organic phosphates are important in biochemistry and biogeochemistry (ecology), and inorganic phosphates are mined to obtain phosphorus for use in agriculture and industry. At elevated temperatures in the solid state, phosphates can condense to form pyrophosphates.

Phosphate sind die Salze und Ester der Orthophosphorsäure (H₃PO₄). Im weiteren Sinn werden auch die Kondensate (Polymere) der Orthophosphorsäure und ihre Ester Phosphate genannt. Die Ester werden unter Phosphorsäureester beschrieben. Phosphor liegt bei allen diesen Verbindungen in der Oxidationsstufe (V) vor. Sauerstoffverbindungen des Phosphors mit anderen Oxidationsstufen sind unter Phosphor aufgelistet.

Fosfaat (PO₄^3–) is de vorm waarin fosfor het meest in verbindingen voorkomt. Fosfaten zijn zuurresten van fosforzuur (H₃PO₄). Het fosfaatanion is driewaardig negatief geladen en bezit een tetraëdrische structuur. De meeste fosfaten zijn slecht oplosbaar in water, en zijn daarom makkelijk uit een oplossing te verwijderen via een neerslagreactie.

Fosforany (nazwa systematyczna: tetraoksydofosforany(3−); w systemie Stocka: ortofosforany(V)) – związki chemiczne, pochodne kwasu fosforowego. Nazwa obejmuje zarówno sole, jak i estry kwasu fosforowego. W ogólniejszym ujęciu nazwa "fosforany" może dotyczyć także pochodnych innych kwasów fosforowych, m.in. metafosforanów i pirofosforanów.
