Pleasure describes the broad class of mental states that humans and other animals experience as positive, enjoyable, or worth seeking. It includes more specific mental states such as happiness, entertainment, enjoyment, ecstasy, and euphoria. The early psychological account of pleasure, the pleasure principle, describes it as a positive feedback mechanism, motivating the organism to recreate in the future the situation which it has just found pleasurable and to avoid situations that have caused pain in the past.

Freude ist der Gemütszustand oder die primäre Emotion, die als Reaktion auf eine angenehme Situation oder die Erinnerung an eine solche entsteht. Je nach Intensität äußert sie sich als Lächeln, Lachen oder einem Freudenschrei.

Begreppet njutning är centralt inom moralpsykologi, etik och medvetandefilosofi. Det inbegriper all slags lycka och välmående. Det kontrasteras oftast med smärta och lidande. Filosofer och psykologer har ofta betraktat njutning som någonting uppenbart gott. En teori som betonar njutningens värde är hedonismen, som hävdar att alla värden härleds från njutning och smärta och att njutning är det enda, eller högsta, goda. Ibland kombinerades denna enkla syn på mänskliga värden med teorin om att all mänsklig motivation kan förklaras i termer av den handlande agentens strävan efter njutning. Dessa teorier rönte stor popularitet under 1800-talet men förkastades i lika hög grad under 1900-talet.
