The prosecutor is the chief legal representative of the prosecution in countries with either the common law adversarial system, or the civil law inquisitorial system. The prosecution is the legal party responsible for presenting the case in a criminal trial against an individual accused of breaking the law.

Ein Staatsanwalt (feminine Form: Staatsanwältin), in manchen Staaten auch Procurator, Procureur bzw. Prosecutor genannt, ist bei Gericht oberster Vertreter der Anklage. Er ist in vielen Ländern ein Staatsbediensteter, in Deutschland z. B. ein Beamter im höheren Justizdienst in einer Staatsanwaltschaft und damit ein Organ der Rechtspflege.

De openbaar aanklager is degene die namens 'de staat' of namens 'het volk' mensen die ervan verdacht worden de wet te hebben overtreden in staat van beschuldiging stelt. Vervolgens moeten één of meer rechters beoordelen of de verdachte gestraft moet worden, en welke straf wordt opgelegd.

Le procureur est le représentant du ministère public chargé de la poursuite en justice, ou le représentant du gouvernement auprès de certains tribunaux. Son titre et ses fonctions exactes varient selon les pays.
