Standings or rankings are listings which compare sports teams or individuals, institutions, nations, companies, or other entities by ranking them in order of ability or achievement. A table or chart (such as a league table, a ladder or a leaderboard) may be employed to display such listings. A league table may list several related statistics, but they are generally sorted by the primary one that determines the rankings. Many industries and institutions may compete in league tables in order to help bring in new customers and clients. Those tables ranking sports teams are generally used to help determine who may advance to the playoffs or another tournament, who gets promoted or relegated, or who gets a higher draft pick.

Eine Rangordnung (auch Rangfolge, Rangliste, Ranking []) ist eine Reihenfolge mehrerer vergleichbarer Objekte, deren Sortierung eine Bewertung festlegt. Populäre Beispiele sind Weltranglisten im Sport und Musikcharts. Die eindimensionale Anordnung einer Rangordnung vereinfacht den Vergleich und das Treffen einer Auswahl: so werden beim Suchmaschinenranking Ergebnisse einer Suchanfrage nach ihrer Relevanz sortiert. Rangordnungen können nach einfachen, auch umstrittenen, Kriterien erstellt werden oder als Ergebnis von aufwendigen Vergleichsstudien. Häufig bilden ihre Reihenfolgen Bestandteile von Hierarchien ab. Eine konkrete Position in einer Rangordnung wird auch als Platzierung bezeichnet.

Un ranking o ranquin (anglicismo propuesto) es una relación entre un conjunto de elementos tales que, para uno o varios criterios, el primero de ellos presenta un valor superior al segundo, este a su vez mayor que el tercero y así sucesivamente, permitiéndose que dos o más elementos diferentes puedan tener la misma posición. El orden se refleja asignando a cada elemento un ordinal, generalmente números enteros positivos.

Rankingi sportowe dotyczą zawodników, drużyn, krajów w różnych dyscyplinach sportowych i są sporządzane na podstawie osiągnięć w zawodach, zazwyczaj w określonym okresie. W niektórych dyscyplinach sportowych rankingi poza wartością czysto informacyjną odgrywają również istotną rolę przy kwalifikowaniu zawodników i drużyn do zawodów sportowych lub ustalaniu początkowej kolejności w zawodach, w których taka kolejność ma znaczenie.
