WASTE was a peer-to-peer and friend-to-friend protocol and software application developed by Justin Frankel at Nullsoft in 2003 that features instant messaging, chat rooms, and file browsing/sharing capabilities. The name WASTE is a reference to Thomas Pynchon's novel The Crying of Lot 49. In the novel, W.A.S.T.E. is (among other things) an underground postal service.

Waste and wastes are unwanted or unusable materials. Waste is any substance which is discarded after primary use, or it is worthless, defective and of no use.

Unter Abfall bzw. Müll (schweizerisch auch: Kehricht, österreichisch auch: Mist) versteht man Reste, die bei der Zubereitung oder Herstellung von etwas entstehen (Überrest) im festen Zustand, was Flüssigkeiten und Gase in Behältern einschließt. Chemische Rückstände werden auch als Abfallstoffe bezeichnet.

WASTE (auch W.A.S.T.E.) ist ein P2P-Filesharing-Programm für kleine Arbeitsgruppen mit bis zu 50 Benutzern.

WASTE est un protocole peer to peer et ami à ami ainsi qu'une partie de logiciel développé par Justin Frankel (co-inventeur de Gnutella) en 2003.
WASTE est aussi et surtout capable de maintenir un micro réseau (50 personnes maximum) dans lequel tous les échanges (chat, fichiers) sont totalement sécurisés (comprendre chiffrés) et « invisibles » hors de ce réseau.
