Żagiel – rodzaj
pędnika wiatrowego stosowanego do napędów
żaglowców,
jachtów,
bojerów,
żaglowozów itd. Jest to odpowiednio ukształtowany płat tkaniny (ew. innego tworzywa) rozpięty na
omasztowaniu jednostek żaglowych, stawiany
fałami, a kierowany
szotami lub
brasami (wszystko najczęściej przy użyciu wielu lin pomocniczych). Zespół żagli tworzy
ożaglowanie jednostki i służy do napędzania jej. Pierwotnie żagle były szyte z
brytów tkaniny (
bawełna,
dacron,
nylon,
kevlar), obecnie stosuje się też inne metody wytwarzania żagli (
laminowanie,
klejenie). Żagle podzielić można według kształtu, abstrahując od rodzaju ożaglowania, na trójkątne i czworokątne.
