Sensualism is the persistent or excessive pursuit of sensual pleasures and interests In philosophy it refers to the ethical doctrine that feeling is the only criterion for what is good. In epistemology it is a doctrine whereby sensations and perception are the basic and most important form of true cognition. It may oppose abstract ideas. This ideogenetic question was long ago put forward in Greek philosophy (Stoicism, Epicureanism) and further developed to the full by the English Sensualists (John Locke, David Hume) and the English Associationists (Thomas Brown, David Hartley, Joseph Priestley). In the 19th century it was very much taken up by the Positivists (Auguste Comte, Herbert Spencer, Hippolyte Taine, Émile Littré)

Der Sensualismus ist eine besonders in England im 17. Jahrhundert einflussreiche Geistesströmung der Aufklärung. Davon ausgehend ist er aber auch eine in Frankreich heimische philosophische Richtung, die Erfahrung auf individuelle Sinneseindrücke (d.h. aus neurophysiologischen Reizen) bzw. Wahrnehmungen bezieht. Der Sensualismus ist damit eine spezifische Form des Empirismus.

Sensualizm (z łac. sensus – zmysł) to pogląd filozoficzny głoszący, że wszelka wiedza pochodzi od wrażeń zmysłowych (poznanie odbywa się poprzez przeprowadzanie logicznych doświadczeń) i jest tylko bardziej lub mniej złożonym kompleksem spostrzeżeń. W starożytności sensualizm głosili Arystoteles, sofiści, epikurejczycy, cynicy i stoicy. W czasach nowożytnych między innymi Étienne de Condillac, David Hume, Herbert Spencer. Echa sensualizmu, choć w mocno przetworzonej postaci są też obecnie w fenomenologii. Przedstawiciel tego kierunku w teorii poznania, angielski filozof John Locke (1632-1704) twierdził, iż "nie ma niczego w umyśle, co nie istniałoby w zmysłach".
