Ska (, Jamaican ) is a music genre that originated in Jamaica in the late 1950s and was the precursor to rocksteady and reggae. Ska combined elements of Caribbean mento and calypso with American jazz and rhythm and blues. It is characterized by a walking bass line accented with rhythms on the upbeat. Ska developed in Jamaica in the 1960s when Prince Buster, Clement "Coxsone" Dodd, and Duke Reid formed sound systems to play American rhythm & blues and then began recording their own songs. In the early 1960s, ska was the dominant music genre of Jamaica and was popular with British mods. Later it became popular with many skinheads.

Ska ist ein in den späten 1950er Jahren auf Jamaika entstandenes Musikgenre.

El ska es un género musical originado a finales de la década de 1950 y popularizado durante la primera mitad de los años 1960, que deriva principalmente de la fusión de la música afroamericana de la época, con ritmos populares propiamente jamaicanos, siendo el precursor directo del rocksteady y más tarde del reggae. Al ser un género particularmente apto para fusiones ha sido incorporado, a través de distintas variantes, a los más diversos lenguajes musicales.

Le ska est un genre musical ayant émergé en Jamaïque à la fin des années 1950. Il se caractérise par un son rythmé et reconnaissable au contretemps marqué par la guitare, les claviers et parfois les cuivres. Il est diffusé internationalement grâce notamment au label Island Records de Chris Blackwell. Laurel Aitken, Toots & The Maytals ou encore Desmond Dekker & The Aces et The Skatalites ont été des pionniers de ce style musical.
