Sociology is the scientific study of social behavior or society, including its origins, development, organization, networks, and institutions. It is a social science that uses various methods of empirical investigation and critical analysis to develop a body of knowledge about social order, social disorder, and social change. Many sociologists aim to conduct research that may be applied directly to social policy and welfare, while others focus primarily on refining the theoretical understanding of social processes. Subject matter ranges from the micro level of individual agency and interaction to the macro level of systems and the social structure.

Sociology ist die soziologische Fachzeitschrift der British Sociological Association. Sociology gilt als eine der führenden Soziologiezeitschriften weltweit. Sie wird von Anthony Giddens als „eine der führenden Zeitschriften in den Sozialwissenschaften“ und von John Brewer als „Vorzeigezeitschrift der British Sociological Association und wichtigste Soziologiezeitschrift des Vereinigten Königreichs“ bezeichnet. Für das Jahr 2013 hatte die Zeitschrift einen Impact Factor von 1,348 und lag damit in der Statistik des Social Science Citation Index auf Rang 28 von 137 betrachteten Zeitschriften in der Kategorie Soziologie.

Soziologie (lat.  ‚Gefährte‘ und -logie) ist eine Wissenschaft, die sich mit der empirischen und theoretischen Erforschung des sozialen Verhaltens befasst, das heißt die Voraussetzungen, Abläufe und Folgen des Zusammenlebens von Menschen untersucht. Als systematisch-kritische Wissenschaft des Sozialen ging die Soziologie aus dem Zeitalter der Aufklärung hervor und nimmt als Sozialwissenschaft eine Mittelstellung zwischen Natur- und Geisteswissenschaften ein. Ihren Namen erhielt sie von Auguste Comte, bevor sie sich in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts als eigenständige universitäre Disziplin durchsetzte. Ferdinand Tönnies, Georg Simmel und Max Weber gelten als Begründer der deutschsprachigen Soziologie.

Sociologie is de studie van het sociale gedrag van de mens, en van de sociale, politieke, religieuze en economische aspecten van de menselijke samenleving. Daarbij staan vooral de inrichting en veranderingen daarvan, alsmede sociologische problemen centraal. Belangrijke vragen zijn hoe sociale cohesie, sociale ongelijkheid en identiteit tot stand komen.

Créée en 1967, le Sociology (ISSN 0038-0385) est une revue bimensuelle britannique de sociologie. Il est décrit par Anthony Giddens comme "one of the leading journals in the social sciences."

La sociologie peut être définie comme la branche des sciences humaines qui cherche à comprendre et à expliquer l'impact de la dimension sociale sur les représentations (façons de penser) et les comportements (façons d'agir) humains.
