Soil is the mixture of minerals, organic matter, gases, liquids, and the countless organisms that together support life on Earth. Soil is a natural body known as the pedosphere and which performs four important functions: it is a medium for plant growth; it is a means of water storage, supply and purification; it is a modifier of Earth's atmosphere; it is a habitat for organisms; all of which, in turn, modify the soil.

Soil, often typeset as SOiL, is an American rock band that formed in Chicago, Illinois in 1997. After some independent releases, the band was the first rock group signed to J Records and achieved mainstream success with their major label debut, Scars, in 2001. The J Records second album Redefine was released in 2004 and the band embarked upon a worldwide tour to follow. In late 2004 frontman Ryan McCombs left the group. He would go on to become the new vocalist of Drowning Pool the following year.

De bodem is de bovenste laag van de aardkorst maar de definitie in de bodemkunde is specifieker, namelijk die laag van de aardkorst die door planten beworteld wordt (de rhizosfeer), of waarin zich bodemvormende processen afspelen.

Hors des milieux marins et aquatiques d'eau douce, il est ainsi à la fois le support et le produit du vivant. Le sol est une interface entre biosphère et lithosphère. La partie du sol spécialement riche en matière organique se nomme l'humus.
