The
solidus (the
Latin word for
solid) was originally a
gold coin issued in the
Late Roman Empire, and a weight for
gold more generally, corresponding to 4.5 grams. It was widely propagated in 312 AD by
Constantine I and replaced the older
Aureus as the main gold denomination.
