The soul in many religions, philosophical and mythological traditions, is the incorporeal and immortal essence of a living being. According to Abrahamic religions, only human beings have immortal souls. For example, the Catholic theologian Thomas Aquinas attributed "soul" () to all organisms but argued that only human souls are immortal. Other religions (most notably Jainism and Hinduism) teach that all biological organisms have souls, while some teach that even non-biological entities (such as rivers and mountains) possess souls. This latter belief is called animism.

Der Ausdruck Seele hat vielfältige Bedeutungen, je nach den unterschiedlichen mythischen, religiösen, philosophischen oder psychologischen Traditionen und Lehren, in denen er vorkommt. Im heutigen Sprachgebrauch ist oft die Gesamtheit aller Gefühlsregungen und geistigen Vorgänge beim Menschen gemeint. In diesem Sinne ist „Seele“ weitgehend mit dem Begriff Psyche synonym. „Seele“ kann aber auch ein Prinzip bezeichnen, von dem angenommen wird, dass es diesen Regungen und Vorgängen zugrunde liegt, sie ordnet und auch körperliche Vorgänge herbeiführt oder beeinflusst.

De ziel is in de meest gebruikte betekenis de niet-materiële, spirituele component van mensen en andere dieren. In een andere (esoterische) opvatting is het de drager, de uitdrukking of het voertuig van het ego of de (eeuwige) geest.

Soul is een muziekstijl die in de jaren vijftig en zestig ontstond uit rhythm-and-blues en gospelmuziek bij de Afro-Amerikaanse bevolking in het zuiden van de Verenigde Staten. Hoofdvertegenwoordigers waren Ray Charles, Sam Cooke, James Brown, Aretha Franklin en Stevie Wonder. Bij soul figureert veelal een zanger(es) met ondersteuning van achtergrondzang en een band met ritmesectie, koperblazers en saxofoons.

Seoel of Seoul (Koreaans: 서울) is de meer dan 600 jaar oude hoofdstad van Zuid-Korea. Tot 1945 was het de hoofdstad van heel Korea. Sinds het ontstaan van de Republiek Korea, beter bekend als Zuid-Korea, in 1948, is het de hoofdstad van dat land, behalve een korte tijd tijdens de Koreaanse Oorlog.
