In phonetics and linguistics, a phone is any distinct speech sound or gesture, regardless of whether or not the exact sound is critical to the meanings of words. In contrast, a phoneme is a speech sound that in a given language, if swapped with another phoneme, would change the meaning of the word. Phones are absolute, not specific to any language, while phonemes can only be discussed in reference to specific languages.

In der Linguistik ist das Phon (auch: Laut, Sprachlaut) die kleinste unterscheidbare „Lauteinheit im Lautkontinuum“ – ein minimales Schallsegment, das noch als selbständig wahrgenommen wird.

En phonétique, un phone est un synonyme technique de son, vu sous l'angle de ses propriétés linguistiques. Il peut désigner spécifiquement :

• un son d'une langue (ou un geste dans le cas d'une langue des signes) considéré du point de vue de la physique sans considération de ses propriétés phonologiques
• un segment parlé doté de propriétés physiques ou perceptuelles distinctives
• une occurrence donnée d'un tel segment.
