Speed limit enforcement is the action taken by appropriately empowered authorities to check that road vehicles are complying with the speed limit in force on roads and highways. Methods used include roadside speed traps set up and operated by the police and automated roadside 'speed camera' systems which may incorporate the use of an automatic number plate recognition system. Traditionally, the police would have used stopwatches to measure the time taken for a vehicle to cover a known distance, but more recently, they have had speed guns and automated in-vehicle systems at their disposal.

Maximumsnelheid kan betekenen:

• de topsnelheid oftewel de hoogst haalbare snelheid waartoe een weg- of railvoertuig, vliegtuig of (ruimte)vaartuig, gezien zijn technische mogelijkheden, in staat is. Ook mensen en dieren hebben een topsnelheid.
• De snelheidslimiet oftewel de hoogst toegestane snelheid voor (motor)voertuigen op de openbare weg. De maximumsnelheid verschilt per land, per wegcategorie en voertuigcategorie. De maximumsnelheid hoeft niet gelijk te zijn aan de ontwerpsnelheid van een weg. Ook bij de scheepvaart gelden maximumsnelheden. Bij spoorwegen spreekt men van de baanvaksnelheid.

Dans le cadre de la prévention et de la sécurité routière, plusieurs pays ont légiféré pour ce qui concerne la vitesse sur les routes avec pour objectif d'éviter de nombreux accidents automobiles. Dans le cas des autoroutes, les limitations ont souvent été instaurées (notamment en France et en Belgique) dans les années 1970 afin d'économiser du carburant (à la suite de la crise pétrolière de 1973).
