Set construction is the process by which a construction manager undertakes to build full scale scenery suitable for viewing by camera, as specified by a  production designer  or art director working in collaboration with the director of a production to create a set for a theatrical, film or television production. The set designer produces a scale model, scale drawings, paint elevations (a scale painting supplied to the scenic painter of each element that requires painting), and research about props, textures, and so on. Scale drawings typically include a groundplan, elevation, and section of the complete set, as well as more detailed drawings of individual scenic elements which, in theatrical productions, may be static, flown, or built onto scenery wagons. Models and paint elevations are frequently hand-produced, though in recent years, many Production Designers and most commercial theatres have begun producing scale drawings with the aid of computer drafting programs such as AutoCAD or Vectorworks.

Kulissen (von französisch coulisse) waren ursprünglich die Gleitbahnen, in denen die Schiebewände, respektive die Teile der Dekoration bei Theateraufführungen oder Filmaufnahmen verschoben wurden. Heute wird der Ausdruck Kulisse für die Schiebewand verwendet, für Gleitbahn wird im Französischen auch der Begriff glissière verwendet. In historischen Bühnenbildern waren das meist parallel zur Rampe stehende, mit bemaltem Stoff oder Papier bespannte Holzrahmen. Bühnenbilder moderner Theater bestehen aus vielfältigen Objekten und Materialien, die meist nicht Kulissen genannt werden.

In een theater-, film- of televisiestudio is de set het tafereel dat is opgebouwd om een scène te kunnen spelen. De set wordt ontworpen door een decorontwerper en opgebouwd door timmerlieden en andere vakmensen en geschilderd en aangekleed om het een zo realistisch mogelijke uitstraling te geven.

Au théâtre, les coulisses (plus rarement la coulisse) sont, à l'origine, des glissières qui permettaient le déplacement des panneaux décoratifs, généralement distribués par paires, de chaque côté de la scène, et qui avaient pour double fonction de dissimuler les dégagements latéraux et d'accentuer l'effet de perspective.

Kulissi on lavastuksen osana toimiva näyttämön sivun tai takaseinän maalattu kuvapinta. Kulissin tarkoitus on luoda näyttämölle tai kuvattavalle alueelle tietynlainen tunnelma tai illuusio jostain tapahtumapaikasta. Kulisseja käytetään etenkin teattereissa sekä kuvattaessa elokuvia tai televisio-ohjelmia. Sanaa käytetään myös kuvaannollisessa mielessä, esimerkiksi sanonta "kulissien takana" tarkoittaa "julkisuudelta piilossa."
