stirrup

A stirrup is a light frame or ring that holds the foot of a rider, attached to the saddle by a strap, often called a stirrup leather. Stirrups are usually paired and are used to aid in mounting and as a support while using a riding animal (usually a horse or other equine, such as a mule). They greatly increase the rider's ability to stay in the saddle and control the mount, increasing the animal's usefulness to humans in areas such as communication, transportation and warfare.

Graham Eric „Jock“ Stirrup, Baron Stirrup KG, GCB, AFC, ADC (* 4. Dezember 1949) ist ein Offizier der Royal Air Force, ehemaliger Leiter des britischen Verteidigungsstabs und parteiunabhängiges Mitglied des House of Lords.

Ein Steigbügel ist die Fußstütze für einen Reiter, die in Höhe der Füße seitlich vom Reittier (z. B. einem Pferd) herabhängt.

Stijgbeugels zijn met stijgbeugelriemen aan het zadel bevestigde voetsteunen die worden gebruikt bij het paardrijden. Met stijgbeugels wordt het paard bestegen en de voeten van de ruiter worden tijdens het rijden ondersteund. Een ruiter gebruikt de stijgbeugels niet zozeer om in balans te blijven maar meer als bescherming bij een plotselinge zijsprong.
