A stream bed is the channel bottom of a stream, river or creek; the physical confine of the normal water flow. The lateral confines or channel margins, during all but flood stage, are known as the stream banks or river banks. In fact, a flood occurs when a stream overflows its banks and flows onto its flood plain. As a general rule, the bed is that part of the channel, just at the "normal" water line and the banks are that part above the water line. However, because water flow varies, this differentiation is subject to local interpretation. Usually, the bed is kept clear of terrestrial vegetation, whereas the banks are subjected to water flow only during unusual or perhaps infrequent high water stages and therefore might support vegetation some or much of the time.

Ein Flussbett oder auch Bachbett ist eine Hohlform in der Landoberfläche, in der ein, permanent oder temporär wasserführender, Fluss oder Bach verläuft. Für Fließgewässer allgemein spricht man vom Gewässerbett, in der Hydraulik von einem Gerinne. Flussbetten entstehen letztlich durch die Wirkung der Erosion des fließenden Wassers.

Koryto rzeki – najniższa część doliny rzeki, która znajduje się w obrębie jej dna i przez którą okresowo lub ciągle płynie woda dokonując zmian w kształcie powierzchni. Jeśli rzeka ma silny nurt, następuje erozja denna, jeżeli słaby – akumulacja niesionego materiału, a jeśli meandruje, dochodzi do erozji bocznej. Koryto stanowi fragment łożyska rzeki.

Rícní koryto (též recište) ohranicuje vodní tok. Proudí jím voda z vyšších poloh do nižších. Díky erozní síle vody dochází k postupnému zahlubování do podloží. Rícní koryto muže být pomerne melké s nízkými okraji jako napríklad Labe v dolní cásti toku, ale také muže tvorit strmé okraje, vypínající se až nekolik set metru - hovoríme o kanonech. Nejznámejším príkladem je Grand Canyon v USA. Tyto príkré svahy jsou typické nejcasteji pro horní cásti toku, kde má koryto velký spád a voda znacnou erozní sílu.
