student

A student or pupil is a learner, or someone who attends an educational institution. In Britain until about 2012, underage schoolchildren were always referred to as "pupils", while those attending university are termed "students". In the USA, and more recently also in Britain, the term "student" is applied to both categories, no doubt due to US influence. In its widest use, student is used for anyone who is learning, including mid-career adults who are taking vocational education or returning to university, or younger 'researchers or artists learning from a more experienced (and usually older) colleague and mentor.

Student–teacher ratio or student–faculty ratio is the number of students who attend a school or university divided by the number of teachers in the institution. For example, a student–teacher ratio of 10:1 indicates that there are 10 students for every one teacher. The term can also be reversed to create a teacher–student ratio.

Als Studenten (v. lat.: studens „strebend (nach), sich interessierend (für), sich bemühend um“, im Plural studentes) bezeichnet man Personen, die in einer Einrichtung des tertiären Bildungsbereichs immatrikuliert sind und dort eine akademische Ausbildung betreiben oder sich einer hochschulmäßigen Weiterbildung unterziehen.

Een student is iemand die een studie volgt in het hoger onderwijs, dat wil zeggen aan een universiteit, het HBO (Nederland), een hogeschool (België) of een college (Verenigde Staten).

William Sealy Gosset (13 juin 1876 – 16 octobre 1937) connu sous le pseudonyme Student est un statisticien anglais. Embauché par la brasserie Guinness pour stabiliser le goût de la bière, il a ainsi inventé le test de Student. Le test de Student est aujourd'hui utilisé de manière standard pour mettre en évidence une éventuelle différence entre deux échantillons ou tester la nullité d'un paramètre (p. ex. un coefficient d'une régression linéaire).

Étudiant (au féminin étudiante) est un mot dérivé du latin studere qui signifie « s'appliquer à apprendre quelque chose ». Cependant, le terme ne s'applique pas à toute personne qui apprend. On le réserve généralement aux personnes intégrées dans un parcours scolaire ou universitaire.
