Asphyxia or asphyxiation (from Ancient Greek  "without" and , "squeeze" (throb of heart)) is a condition of severely deficient supply of oxygen to the body that arises from abnormal breathing. An example of asphyxia is choking. Asphyxia causes generalized hypoxia, which affects primarily the tissues and organs. There are many circumstances that can induce asphyxia, all of which are characterized by an inability of an individual to acquire sufficient oxygen through breathing for an extended period of time. Asphyxia can cause coma or death.

Suffocation sind eine 1990 gegründete Death-Metal-Band aus New York. Sie waren eine der ersten Bands, die Death Metal mit New York Hardcore und Grindcore vermischten und gelten als Begründer des Brutal Death Metal.

Als eine Asphyxie oder Asphyxia (von altgriechisch   „das Aufhören des Pulsschlages“) wird allgemein ein Zustand mit Kreislaufschwäche und Atemdepression bis -stillstand bezeichnet, der mit Hypoxie und Hyperkapnie einhergeht. Ursachen können ein Herz-Kreislauf-Versagen, eine Atemlähmung oder eine Verlegung der Atemwege sein.

Adoptaron las estructuras del progressive metal y los ritmos del grindcore al death metal, lo que les hace pioneros en los estilos technical death metal y por muchos nombrados como los precursores del brutal death metal. Suffocation esta a la par con bandas como Immolation e Incantation debido a que pertenecen al conocido "death metal neoyorquino" (New York Death metal o NYDM para abreviar).

Door het dichtknijpen van de luchtpijp en/of de halsslagaders sterft het slachtoffer, als dit te lang duurt, aan de gevolgen van zuurstofgebrek (verstikking). Wanneer de zuurstoftoevoer naar de hersenen volledig is afgesloten, volgt bewusteloosheid doorgaans snel. Het maakt hierbij echter veel uit of alleen de toevoer van lucht naar de longen wordt afgesloten, wat pas na minuten tot bewusteloosheid leidt, of dat de bloedtoevoer naar de hersenen wordt onderbroken, waarbij dit effect veel sneller intreedt (seconden). In de forensische geneeskunde wordt de term 'wurging' (met de handen) vaak onderscheiden van verstikking door omsnoering (met touw, sjaal of dergelijke voorwerpen) en van verstikking door het bedekken van mond en neus met bijvoorbeeld een kussen.
