suit of armour

Plate armour is a historical type of personal body armour made from iron or steel plates, culminating in the iconic suit of armour entirely encasing the wearer. While there are early predecessors such as the Roman-era lorica segmentata, full plate armour developed in Europe during the Late Middle Ages, especially in the context of the Hundred Years' War, from the coat of plates worn over mail suits during the 13th century.

Als Rüstung bezeichnet man eine historische Schutzbekleidung, die ihren Träger in erster Linie vor Waffeneinwirkung und gegen Verwundung schützen soll. Rüstungen sind bereits seit Jahrtausenden gebräuchlich und wurden aus den unterschiedlichsten Materialien und nach verschiedenen Methoden hergestellt. Die im Mittelalter gebräuchliche Rüstung war ein aus Metallplatten (Plattenharnisch) oder aus Ringen (Kettenrüstung) bestehender Schutz des Kriegers für Brust (Harnisch), Hals (Halsberge), Arme (Armschienen, Panzerhandschuhe) und Beine (Beinschienen, Eisenschuh). Helm und Schild wurden meist nicht zur Rüstung gerechnet.

Een harnas is metalen of zwaar leren kleding die door soldaten werd gedragen als een soort pantser. Het principe is hetzelfde als het schild van de schildpad: een hard extra laagje dat beschermt tegen een dodelijke aanval van de tegenstander.

Une armure est un équipement (arme) corporel défensif, utilisé pour protéger le corps dans sa plus grande partie des coups de l'ennemi et autres dégats. Deux aspects primordiaux et antithétiques quant à la défense du porteur de l'armure président à sa conception : sont à la mobilité (ce qui pousserait à alléger l'armure) et une grande protection (ce qui pousserait à alourdir l'armure). Chaque modèle insiste sur l'un de ces deux aspects de la protection individuelle, ce qui n'exclut pas des tentatives de compromis.
