In electrical engineering, a switch is an electrical component that can break an electrical circuit, interrupting the current or diverting it from one conductor to another. The mechanism of a switch may be operated directly by a human operator to control a circuit (for example, a light switch or a keyboard button), may be operated by a moving object such as a door-operated switch, or may be operated by some sensing element for pressure, temperature or flow. A relay is a switch that is operated by electricity. Switches are made to handle a wide range of voltages and currents; very large switches may be used to isolate high-voltage circuits in electrical substations.

Schalter sind eine Baugruppe, die mittels zweier elektrisch leitender Materialien oder eines Halbleiterbauelements eine elektrisch leitende Verbindung herstellt oder trennt (Schaltkontakt). Idealerweise arbeitet er nach dem Alles-oder-nichts-Prinzip; das heißt, eine Betätigung führt immer eindeutig zu einem Schaltzustand offen oder geschlossen.

Een schakelaar is in elektrische zin een "poort" tussen geleidende delen, die de elektrische stroom kan doorlaten ("gesloten") of onderbreken ("open"). Het vormt onderdeel van een schakeling, vaak als bedieningspunt. De bekendste is de lichtschakelaar in huis waarmee een lamp "aan" of "uit" gedaan kan worden.

Un interrupteur (dérivé de rupture) est un organe, physique ou virtuel, permettant d'interrompre ou d'autoriser le passage d'un flux. Il ne faut pas confondre l'interrupteur qui permet d'éteindre ou d'allumer un appareil, et le commutateur qui permet de choisir entre plusieurs états actifs d'un appareil.
