A sound synthesizer (usually abbreviated as "synthesizer" or "synth", also spelled "synthesiser") is an electronic musical instrument that generates electric signals that are converted to sound through instrument amplifiers and loudspeakers or headphones. Synthesizers may either imitate the still existing sounds (instruments, vocal, natural sound, etc.), or generate new electronic timbres not existing before. They are often played with a musical keyboard, but they can be controlled via a variety of other input devices, including music sequencers, instrument controllers, fingerboards, guitar synthesizers, wind controllers, and electronic drums. Synthesizers without built-in controllers are often called sound modules, and are controlled via MIDI or CV/Gate using a controller device.

Ein Synthesizer (; englische Aussprache ) ist ein Musikinstrument, welches auf elektronischem Wege per Klangsynthese Töne erzeugt. Er ist eines der zentralen Werkzeuge in der Produktion elektronischer Musik. Man unterscheidet analoge und digitale Synthesizer. Ebenso wie in vielen anderen Technikbereichen haben digitale Geräte die Analogtechnik fast vollständig abgelöst. Viele ältere Analoggeräte werden jedoch wegen ihrer charakteristischen Eigenschaften immer noch eingesetzt und haben teilweise Kultstatus unter Musikern erreicht. Der charakteristische Klang bestimmter verbreiteter Geräte und die kreative Nutzung von deren Eigenarten hat vielfach die Entwicklung ganzer Musikrichtungen beeinflusst, etwa bei Acid House, Techno und Drum and Bass.

Een synthesizer is een elektronisch muziekinstrument dat klanken en geluiden kunstmatig (meestal elektronisch) opwekt. Met een synthesizer is het mogelijk het op te wekken geluid vergaand te beïnvloeden, zodat nieuwe, nog niet bestaande klanken gemaakt kunnen worden. Ook kunnen sommige synthesizers de klanken van reeds bestaande (akoestische) instrumenten, bijna perfect nabootsen (bijvoorbeeld piano of orgel).

Un synthétiseur (ou simplement synthé) est un instrument de musique électronique capable de créer et de manipuler des sons sous forme de signal électrique. Les sonorités varient en fonction de la technique de synthèse sonore utilisée (tables d'ondes, échantillons, synthèse additive, synthèse soustractive, modulation de fréquence, modélisation physique, modulation de phase, synthèse granulaire...).

Il sintetizzatore (abbreviato anche in synth dal termine in inglese) è uno strumento musicale che appartiene alla famiglia degli elettrofoni. È un apparato in grado di generare autonomamente segnali audio, sotto il controllo di un musicista o di un sequencer. Si tratta di uno strumento che può generare imitazioni di strumenti musicali reali o creare suoni ed effetti non esistenti in natura. Attualmente troviamo anche sintetizzatori virtuali (VST, AU, RTAS standard lanciato nel 1997), che assolvono a questo compito interamente a livello software e che si appoggiano su schede sonore interne o esterne collegate ad un Personal Computer.
