typesetting

Typesetting is the composition of text by means of arranging physical types or the digital equivalents. Stored letters and other symbols (called sorts in mechanical systems and glyphs in digital systems) are retrieved and ordered according to a language's orthography for visual display. Typesetting requires the prior process of designing a font (which is widely but erroneously confused with and substituted for typeface). One significant effect of typesetting was that authorship of works could be spotted more easily; making it difficult for copiers who have not gained permission.

Als Satz bezeichnet man in einer Druckerei, einem Verlag o. Ä. den Arbeitsschritt, der durch ein technisches Verfahren aus einer Vorlage (einem Text, Grafiken, Bildern usw.) eine drucktaugliche Form herstellt. Auch das Produkt des Setzvorgangs selbst wird als „Satz“, die Tätigkeit als „setzen“, die dafür benutzte Schrift als Satzschrift bezeichnet.

Zetten is het eerste proces in de reeks processen uit de boekdrukkunst. Bij het zetten wordt ervoor gezorgd dat de lettertekens en bijbehorende karakters (en de afbeeldingen) op de juiste plaats in de drukvorm terechtkomen.

Il termine composizione tipografica fa riferimento all'uso di tecniche di stampa realizzate per mezzo di caratteri mobili, cliché, monotype o linotype. Consiste in una serie di operazioni, manuali o semiautomatiche, che si eseguono per ottenere una cosiddetta forma di stampa, partendo da un contenuto scritto di qualsiasi genere (originale di stampa).

Skład – termin zecerski (dziś już historyczny) oznaczający tekst, który powstał fizycznie, czyli został ułożony z czcionek lub wierszy linotypowych (a także innych elementów, jak monotypy, linie czy justunek). Skład ma postać szpalty i będzie dopiero łamany. Składem jest także tabela, już złożona, ale jeszcze nie włamana w kolumnę.
