A verb, from the Latin verbum meaning word, is a word (part of speech) that in syntax conveys an action (bring, read, walk, run, learn), an occurrence (happen, become), or a state of being (be, exist, stand). In the usual description of English, the basic form, with or without the particle to, is the infinitive. In many languages, verbs are inflected (modified in form) to encode tense, aspect, mood, and voice. A verb may also agree with the person, gender, and/or number of some of its arguments, such as its subject, or object. Verbs have tenses: present, to indicate that an action is being carried out; past, to indicate that an action has been done; future, to indicate that an action will be done.

Verb (lat. verbum temporale (zeitliches Wort) oder kurz verbum (Wort)), auch Verbum, Zeitwort oder Tätigkeitswort, ist ein fachsprachlicher Ausdruck der traditionellen Grammatik für eine Wortart, die eine Tätigkeit, ein Geschehen oder einen Zustand ausdrückt, und erfasst Wörter wie gehen, denken, segeln und wandern. In vielen, aber keineswegs allen, Sprachen sind Verben dadurch charakterisiert, dass sie finit oder infinit sein können, d. h. dass sie als finite Verben Wortformen (Flexion) für Tempora bzw. für Personalformen ausbilden. Der Verbalaspekt bzw. die Aktionsart beschreiben den zeitlichen Verlauf eines verbalen Geschehens; hierbei unterscheidet man einen durativen oder imperfektiven sowie einen punktuellen oder perfektiven Aspekt. Der Aspekt beschreibt die Haltung des Sprechers zur zeitlichen Struktur von Handlungen oder Ereignissen.

Het werkwoord (Latijn: verbum [afk.: ww.]) is een woordsoort die in bijna alle talen van de wereld samen met het subject (onderwerp) en eventueel één of meer objecten (voorwerp) de basis vormt van een zin.

Le verbe ( du Latin verbum, mot, verbe ) constitue avec le nom la catégorie de mots ou partie du discours principale de toute langue. La tradition grammaticale présente le verbe en opposition au nom, parce qu'il a le pouvoir d'exprimer un procès, en traduisant une action accomplie (ex: Il regarde un film) ou subie par le sujet (ex: Il a été déçu par ce film), ou un état (ex: Il est satisfait) ou des modifications du sujet (ex: Il a changé d'avis). A cet aspect sémantique la linguistique contemporaine, de tendance majoritairemant distibutionniste et structuraliste, oppose une approche morphosyntaxique , rejetant toute définition du verbe fondée sur son rapport avec un aspect de la réalité qui le distinguerait du nom ( Fonction référentielle ) pour privilégier sa fonction de mise en relation des autres composants de la phrase.

Czasownik – odmienna oraz samodzielna część mowy przedstawiająca dziejące się czynności oraz niektóre stany. W zdaniu tworzy orzeczenie. Czasowniki są nazwami czynności jakie wykonują w danym czasie istoty żywe, narzędzia lub maszyny, oraz nazwami stanów, w jakich te istoty bądź przedmioty się znajdują. Nie w każdym języku da się wyróżnić jasną klasę czasowników, np. w języku japońskim przymiotniki mają wiele właściwości charakterystycznych dla czasowników.
