verso

The terms recto and verso refer to the text written on the "front" and "back" sides of a leaf of paper in a bound item such as a codex, book, broadsheet, or pamphlet. The terms are shortened from Latin recto folio and verso folio, translating to "on the right side of the page" and "on the turned side of the page", respectively. The page faces themselves are called folium rectum and folium versum in Latin, and the ablative recto, verso already imply that the text on the page (and not the physical page itself) are referred to.

Verso (lat. versus „gewendet, gedreht“) bezeichnet die Rückseite eines Blattes Papier, Papyrus, Pergament oder auch einer Banknote (bei Münzen: Revers). Ursprünglich bezeichnete man damit in der Papyrologie die meist unbeschriebene Außenseite der Papyrusrolle, auf der die einzelnen Papyrusstreifen senkrecht zu den Schriftzeilen und der Rollenlänge stehen. Abkürzung bei der Paginierung durch ein hochgestelltes „v“, z. B. 76^v.

Se le llama verso a una de las unidades en que puede dividirse un poema, superior generalmente al pie e inferior a la estrofa. En la literatura en lenguas romances, los testimonios en verso preceden a los testimonios en prosa. Aunque ambas formas de expresión manifiestan históricamente una tendencia innegable a la especialización (el verso para la lírica, la prosa para la narrativa, el teatro y los textos argumentativos y expositivos), no faltan ejemplos tanto de verso no lírico (épico, narrativo en general, dramático o expositivo, como en la poesía didáctica grecolatina) como de prosa lírica. Es una forma especial de expresarse, es un conjunto de palabras sujetas a medida, ritmo y cadencia.

La revue littéraire francophone Verso a été fondée en 1977 par Claude Seyve et Alain Wexler, à Lucenay, Rhône. Elle présente une longévité inhabituelle pour une revue de poésie.
