The vocative case (abbreviated , voc.) is the case used for a noun that identifies a person (animal, object, etc.) being addressed or, occasionally, the determiners of that noun. A vocative expression is an expression of direct address where the identity of the party spoken to is set forth expressly within a sentence. For example, in the sentence, "I don't know, John", John is a vocative expression that indicates the party being addressed—as opposed to the sentence, "I don't know John", where John is the direct object of the verb "know."

Unter Vokativ (auch Anredefall oder Anredeform) versteht man gemeinhin eine spezielle Form eines Nomens, zumeist eines Substantivs, die gebraucht wird, um den Adressaten einer sprachlichen Äußerung direkt anzureden oder anzurufen. Der Vokativ wird manchmal nicht als Kasus im grammatischen Sinne angesehen, weil er nicht als Satzglied fungiert, sondern als Anruf- und Anredeform des Nomens, die allerdings in manchen Sprachen oberflächlich wie ein Kasus aussehen kann. Eine solche kasusähnliche Vokativform gab es sehr wahrscheinlich im Ur-Indogermanischen, welche bis heute in einigen Nachfolgesprachen Europas und des indoiranischen Sprachraums erhalten ist.

En linguistique, on appelle vocatif le cas grammatical exprimant l'interpellation directe d'une personne (ou d'une chose) au moyen d'un appellatif (nom propre ou terme d'adresse). Dans les langues à déclinaison, cet appellatif prend la marque du vocatif.
