A cordless telephone or portable telephone replaces the handset cord with a radio link. The handset communicates with a base station connected to a fixed telephone line. The range is limited, usually to the same building or some short distance from the base station. The base station attaches to the telephone network the same way a corded telephone does.

Ein Mobiltelefon, auch Handy, Funktelefon, GSM-Telefon (nach dem Mobilfunkstandard GSM), in der Schweiz auch Natel genannt, ist ein tragbares Telefon, das über Funk mit dem Telefonnetz kommuniziert und daher ortsunabhängig eingesetzt werden kann. 2013 wurden weltweit erstmals mehr internetfähige Mobiltelefone mit berührungsempfindlichen Bildschirmen (Smartphones) als herkömmliche Mobiltelefone verkauft. Die zehn größten Hersteller von Mobilfunkgeräten weltweit waren im Jahr 2012 Samsung, Nokia und Apple, danach folgten ZTE, LG, Huawei, TCL, Blackberry (RIM), Motorola und HTC.

Een mobiele telefoon, ook wel mobiel(tje) (in Nederland), gsm (in België) of cellulair (in Suriname) genoemd, is een apparaat waarmee men draadloos kan telefoneren, met behulp van een netwerk van antennes. Mobiele telefoons maken gebruik van radiogolven en van telefooncentrales om binnen een bepaalde regio communicatie tussen de gebruikers mogelijk te maken. De eerste generaties maakten gebruik van analoge modulatie, latere van digitale (GSM en UMTS).

La téléphonie mobile, ou téléphonie cellulaire est un moyen de télécommunications par téléphone sans fil (téléphone mobile). Ce moyen de communication s'est largement répandu à la fin des années 1990. La technologie associée bénéficie des améliorations des composants électroniques, notamment leur miniaturisation, ce qui permet aux téléphones d'acquérir des fonctions jusqu'alors réservées aux ordinateurs.
