Low Countries
against the rule of the
Roman Catholic
King
Philip II of Spain
, who had inherited the region (
Seventeen Provinces
) from the defunct
Duchy of Burgundy
. (The southern Catholic provinces initially joined in the revolt, but later submitted to Spain.)
