The film is epic in scale which is set on a post-apocalyptic timeline. Isao Takahata produced the film for Tokuma Shoten and Hakuhodo, with Top Craft animating. Joe Hisaishi composed the film's musical score. The film stars the voices of Sumi Shimamoto, Goro Naya, Yoji Matsuda, Yoshiko Sakakibara and Iemasa Kayumi.
