The New Republic is a fictional government in the Star Wars universe. The government is inspired by the Galactic Republic, a democratic state that governed the galaxy, which existed before the rise of the Galactic Empire. It is first portrayed in Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) as the ruling government of the galaxy, and as the target of the First Order, a military power that seeks to restore the Old Empire.
