Unlike the West End theatres, which are commercial concerns relying on box-office receipts, "Off West-End" theatres rely on government subsidy. Normally actors, directors, etc. will gain experience in Off West End before appearing in one of the big West End theatres in London or, sometimes, Broadway in New York.
