History of Malta under the Order of Saint John
Malta was ruled by the Order of Saint John from when Emperor Charles V (as Charles II of Sicily) gave the Order the islands of Malta and Gozo as well as Tripoli in 1530 until the French occupied Malta in 1798. The Order also had de jure control over some islands in the Caribbean in the mid-17th century.
