Myanmar ( , or (also with the stress on first syllable); ), officially the
Republic of the Union of Myanmar and also known as
Burma, is a
sovereign state in
Southeast Asia bordered by
Bangladesh,
India,
China,
Laos and
Thailand. One-third of Myanmar's total perimeter of 1,930 km (1,200 miles) forms an uninterrupted coastline along the
Bay of Bengal and the
Andaman Sea. The country's
2014 census revealed a much lower population than expected, with 51 million people recorded. Myanmar is 676,578 square kilometres (261,227 sq mi) in size. Its capital city is
Naypyidaw and its largest city is
Yangon (Rangoon).
