Maritime republics
The maritime republics of the Mediterranean Basin were thalassocratic city-states which flourished in Italy and Dalmatia during the Middle Ages. The best known among the maritime republics were Venice, Genoa, Pisa, Ragusa, and Amalfi. Less prominent were Gaeta, Ancona, Noli.
