1933 Long Beach earthquake
The 1933 Long Beach earthquake took place on March 10 at with a moment magnitude of 6.4 and a maximum Mercalli intensity of VIII (Severe). The epicenter was offshore, southeast of Long Beach on the Newport–Inglewood Fault. Damage to buildings was widespread throughout Southern CaliforniaUnited States. An estimated forty million dollars' worth of property damage resulted, and 115 people died. Many of these fatalities occurred as people ran out of buildings and were hit by falling debris.
