BIOS

The BIOS (, an acronym for Basic Input/Output System and also known as the System BIOS, ROM BIOS or PC BIOS) is a type of firmware used to perform hardware initialization during the booting process (power-on startup) on IBM PC compatible computers, and to provide runtime services for operating systems and programs. The BIOS firmware is built into personal computers (PCs), and it is the first software they run when powered on. The name itself originates from the Basic Input/Output System used in the CP/M operating system in 1975. Originally proprietary to the IBM PC, the BIOS has been reverse engineered by companies looking to create compatible systems and the interface of that original system serves as a de facto standard.

Das BIOS [] (von englisch „basic input/output system“) ist die Firmware bei x86-PCs. Es ist in einem nichtflüchtigen Speicher auf der Hauptplatine eines PC abgelegt und wird unmittelbar nach dessen Einschalten ausgeführt. Aufgabe des BIOS ist es unter anderem, den PC zunächst funktionsfähig zu machen und im Anschluss das Starten eines Betriebssystems einzuleiten.

Bios (vom altgriechischen βίος für „Leben“) kommt als Lexem in Form von Bio- in vielen Lehnwörtern vor, zum Beispiel in:

El Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) o sistema básico de entrada/salida, en computadoras IBM PC compatibles, también conocido como “System BIOS”, “ROM BIOS” o “PC BIOS”, es un estándar de facto que define la interfaz de firmware. El nombre se originó en 1975, en el Basic Input/Output System usado por el sistema operativo CP/M.

Het BIOS, wat een acroniem is voor Basic Input Output System, is een bibliotheek met een set basisinstructies voor de communicatie tussen het besturingssysteem en de hardware. Tijdens het opstarten van een pc, wanneer het besturingssysteem nog niet geladen is, is dit ook de enige software die beschikbaar is.

Le (BIOS, en français : « système élémentaire d'entrée/sortie ») est, au sens strict, un ensemble de fonctions, contenu dans la mémoire morte (ROM) de la carte mère d'un ordinateur, lui permettant d'effectuer des opérations élémentaires lors de sa mise sous tension, par exemple la lecture d'un secteur sur un disque. Par extension, le terme est souvent utilisé pour décrire l'ensemble du micrologiciel de la carte mère.
