Chester Dale (May 3, 1883 – December 16, 1962) was an American banker and
patron of the arts. Dale earned large sums from working for the
New York Stock Exchange, allowing him to collect a group of 19th and 20th-century French paintings. Although he considered establishing a private museum, he donated a part of his collection to the
National Gallery of Art in
Washington, D.C. in 1941. The rest of his collection was bequeathed to the National Gallery upon his death.
