Manhattan

Manhattan (, ) is one of the five boroughs of New York City, in the state of New York in the United States. The borough is coterminous with New York County, founded on November 1, 1683 as one of the state's original counties. The borough consists mostly of Manhattan Island, bounded by the East, Hudson, and Harlem Rivers, and also includes several small adjacent islands and Marble Hill, a small neighborhood on the mainland.

Manhattan [] ist eine Insel an der Mündung des Hudson River, einer der fünf Stadtbezirke (Boroughs) der Stadt New York und deckt sich mit New York County. Die Insel Manhattan Island wird vom Hudson River im Westen, vom East River im Osten und vom Harlem River im Nordosten umflossen. Zum Borough Manhattan gehören außerdem noch weitere kleinere Inseln, darunter Roosevelt Island, Belmont Island, Governors Island, Randall’s Island/Wards Island und ein kleines Stück am Festland, Marble Hill. Marble Hill war bis zum Bau des Harlem River Ship Canal im 19. Jahrhundert noch Teil von Manhattan Island.

Manhattan est l'un des cinq arrondissements (en anglais : borough) de la ville de New York (les quatre autres étant le Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn et Staten Island), il correspond en majeure partie à l'île de Manhattan, d'une superficie de , entourée par le Hudson River à l'ouest, l'Upper New York Bay au sud, l'East River à l'est, et le Harlem River au nord. L'arrondissement de Manhattan coïncide avec le comté de New York (New York County), découpage administratif de l’État de New York, mais ce dernier ne fonctionne pas comme un comté à proprement parler, en effet il n'a aucun pouvoir et dépend entièrement de l'autorité municipale. En 2013, sa population était de , et sa densité est très supérieure à celle de tout autre comté des États-Unis.
