Mech tribe

The Bodo tribe is also known as Mech tribe which is one of the scheduled tribes of India belongs to Kachari group of tribes. Mech is the name given to the Bodo tribe by others. They speak mainly Bodo language, which is a Tibeto-Burman dialect but have got influenced by the Assamese language. The Mech people live in the Dooars region of West Bengal, Eastern Region, Nepal and large number of Mech tribe is found in Assam (Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa, Udalguri, Darrang, Bongaigaon, Sonitpur, Dhubri, Goalpara, Lakhimpur, Kamrup, Karbi Anglong). The name Mech is supposed to be derived from the Mechi River in the Terai region. According to a belief, some ancestors of these people had resided in the region adjoining the Mechi river and subsequently they were named as Mech. Unfortunately these days some people are trying to make division between the Bodos and Mech but the evident truth is that they are same. Just that the Bodos living in West Bengal and Nepal are called as Mech.
