Roubaix is an old mono-industrial and working-class
commune in northern France, in the
department of
Nord, which grew rapidly in the 19th century from its textile industries. This former new town is the second largest city in the French
region of
Nord-Pas-de-Calais ranked by population with about 95,000 inhabitants. Located between the cities of
Lille and
Tourcoing, Roubaix is the
chef-lieu of two
cantons.
