WEB is a computer programming system created by Donald E. Knuth as the first implementation of what he called "literate programming": the idea that one could create software as works of literature, by embedding source code inside descriptive text, rather than the reverse (as is common practice in most programming languages), in an order that is convenient for exposition to human readers, rather than in the order demanded by the compiler.

Das World Wide Web [] ( für „weltweites Netz“, kurz Web, WWW, selten und vor allem in der Anfangszeit und den USA auch W3) ist ein über das Internet abrufbares System von elektronischen Hypertext-Dokumenten, sogenannten Webseiten. Sie sind durch Hyperlinks untereinander verknüpft und werden im Internet über die Protokolle HTTP oder HTTPS übertragen. Die Webseiten enthalten meist Texte, oft mit Bildern und grafischen Elementen illustriert. Häufig sind auch Videos, Tondokumente und Musikstücke eingebettet.

WEB est un système de programmation informatique créé par Donald E. Knuth et notamment utilisé pour coder TeX et Metafont. C'est une des premières implémentations de ce que Knuth appelle « programmation littéraire », dans lequel un texte descriptif est écrit et comprend le code informatique plutôt que l’inverse (habituellement le code contient le texte descriptif), de manière à être plus pratique à lire au lieu d’être organisé selon l’ordre requis par le compilateur.

Le (WWW), littéralement la « toile (d’araignée) mondiale », communément appelé le Web, et parfois la Toile, est un système hypertexte public fonctionnant sur Internet. Le Web permet de consulter, avec un navigateur, des pages accessibles sur des sites. L’image de la toile d’araignée vient des hyperliens qui lient les pages web entre elles.
