Microsoft Windows (englische Aussprache []) ist ein
Markenname für
Betriebssysteme des
US-amerikanischen Unternehmens
Microsoft. Ursprünglich war
Microsoft Windows eine grafische Erweiterung des Betriebssystems
MS-DOS (wie beispielsweise auch
GEM oder
PC/GEOS). Später wurde von Microsoft selbst die
Windows-NT-Produktlinie entwickelt und schließlich mit dem ursprünglichen
Windows, welches auch in den Versionen
ME und
98 noch auf einer DOS-Grundlage basierte, unter dem Namen
Windows XP vereinigt. Seitdem heißt das Betriebssystem als Ganzes nur noch
Windows (engl.: Fenster) und ist von
MS-DOS unabhängig. Der Name rührt daher, dass die
Benutzeroberflächen von Anwendungen als rechteckige
Fenster auf dem Bildschirm dargestellt werden.
