An
amphitheatre or
amphitheater is an open-air venue used for entertainment, performances, and sports. The term derives from the
ancient Greek ἀμφιθέατρον (
amphitheatron), from ἀμφί (
amphi), meaning "on both sides" or "around" and θέατρον (
théātron), meaning "place for viewing".
