Institutions are "stable, valued, recurring patterns of behavior." As structures or mechanisms of social order, they govern the behaviour of a set of individuals within a given community. Institutions are identified with a social purpose, transcending individuals and intentions by mediating the rules that govern living behavior.

Institution ( ‚Einrichtung‘) ist ein in den Wirtschafts- und Sozialwissenschaften uneinheitlich definierter Begriff. Übereinstimmend wird darunter ein Regelsystem verstanden, das soziales Verhalten und Handeln von Individuen, Gruppen und Gemeinschaften in einer Weise formt, stabilisiert und lenkt, wodurch es im Ergebnis für andere Interaktionsteilnehmer erwartbar wird. Im weiteren Sinne werden unter Institutionen auch feste gesellschaftliche Einrichtungen wie Behörden, Gerichte, Universitäten und Schulen verstanden.

Le terme (institutum in.), du latin instituo (instituer, établir), désigne une structure d'origine coutumière ou légale, faite d'un ensemble de règles tourné vers une fin, qui participe à l'organisation de la société ou de l'État.

Une institution désigne une structure sociale (ou un système de relations sociales) dotée d'une certaine stabilité dans le temps. Une définition plus élégante consiste à dire qu'une institution est une règle du jeu acceptée socialement.

Institution har flera betydelser:

• en organisation, en sammanslutning av människor
• en organisatorisk enhet inom en högskola eller ett universitet, se institution (akademisk).
• en (nedsättande) benämning på boende för till exempel pensionärer
• en inrättning, en stiftelse
• inom samhällsvetenskapen benämning på de normer och regler som strukturerar mänskligt handlande till bestående eller återkommande beteendemönster
• inom historisk och historiskt inriktad samhällsvetenskap även benämning på bestående och återkommande tankemönster (t.ex. Thorstein Veblens institutioner: "habits of thought" och Institutionalism )
